Using Datacap NETePay
Setup in MicroSale: Manager Menu > Register Setup > Terminal Configuration > Credit Card Setup > Datacap EMV
Regular Preauthorization:
Regular preauthorization initiates a single authorization for the initial amount of the tab. For instance, when a customer opens a tab and orders two drinks totaling $15.00, the preauthorization amount would be $15.00. The card holder does not see a pending charge at this point. At the end of the day during the batch settlement, the initial preauthorized amount of $15.00 drops and only the final total charge is captured.
Summary:
- Initially authorizes the starting check amount
- Additional items can be added to the tab/check without further authorization
- The final check total is captured during End-of-Day (EOD)
Incremental Authorization:
Incremental authorization also begins by authorizing the starting amount of the tab.
Unlike standard preauthorization, the initial authorized amount appears as a pending charge on the cardholder's account (like a pending charge at a gas station before dropping off, and only being charged for the true charged amount).
Summary:
- Initially authorizes the starting check amount
- During End-of-Day (EOD), the authorization amount increments to match the new check total before final capture
Key Differences:
Regular Preauthorization involves a single authorization for the starting check amount only, serving to validate the card's validity and sufficient funds.
Incremental Authorization captures the starting check amount and then a second for the difference between the initial capture and final check amount.
Authorization Code:
In both options, the initial authorization code remains unchanged throughout the transaction. However, the authorization amount is updated with a new value at the time of capture. Consequently, cards should not have holds beyond the final check total with either option. The Incremental option reduces the risk of declines or holds due to sudden jumps in the authorization amount.
