ID Screen > Managers Menu > Menu Maintenance > Shift Levels
Sizes, or Shift Levels, are useful for menu items that offer multiple sizes such as pizza (Small, Medium, and Large). A Shift Level must be created in the Shift Level area before it can be assigned to a menu item. The shift level is assigned to a category in this area and then assigned to the individual menu item later. Assigning a shift level to a category first allows the shift to be placed on a button in the screen with the pizzas. This allows you to either touch the size then the menu item or the menu item then the size (offering flexible ordering techniques).
Using Shift Levels with Menu Items and Modifiers
Shift levels allow you to assign different versions of a menu item—like Small and Large—under the same button. To ensure accurate pricing when those items are customized, you’ll need to set up corresponding price levels in the modifiers.
Why Shift Levels Require Price Levels
When a menu item uses shift levels (e.g., Small or Large), MicroSale treats each version as a new item. For example:
-
A pizza with shift levels becomes SM Pizza or LG Pizza on the virtual check.
When you modify that item (e.g., add toppings), the system needs to know what to charge based on the selected size. That’s where price levels come in.
If price levels aren’t defined in the modifiers:
-
Toppings won’t have a price.
-
The system won’t know what to charge.
-
The check may not total correctly.
Setup Steps
To ensure shift levels and modifiers work together seamlessly:
1. Assign Price Levels in Modifiers
-
Go to each topping or modifier.
-
Add prices in Price Level 1, Price Level 2, etc. to match your shift levels.
-
Example: Use Price Level 1 for Small, Price Level 2 for Large.
-
2. Match Menu Items to Modifier Levels
-
Make sure your menu item (e.g., Pizza) is set to reference the correct price level.
-
This tells the system which price level to use based on the selected size.
If You Only Use One Topping Size
If your toppings are the same price across all sizes:
-
Add the same price to both the regular field and Price Level 1.
-
Set your item to reference Price Level 1 regardless of shift.
This simplifies setup while keeping prices accurate across sizes.
Quick Recap
| Feature | Required Setup |
|---|---|
| Shift Levels | Set on menu items (e.g., SM, LG) |
| Modifier Prices | Define in matching price levels |
| One-size toppings | Use regular price + Price Level 1 |
Setting this up correctly ensures guests are charged the right amount—no matter what size they order or how they customize it.
