1) Create in notepad a file called SalesExempt.dat. Inside this file, type the name of a Menu Department in between quotes, e.g. "Bottle Deposit". Save this file, and copy it inside the Micro$ale directory. This will associate income from this Department to be treated as NON-SALES REVENUE separate from NET SALES. You can place as many different Menu Departments in this file as you need, each on a separate line surrounded by quotation marks.
2) Create a Menu Item for the deposit, e.g. “Bottle Deposit”. Assign this Menu Item to the Department you created above, "Bottle Deposit". Assign it to the appropriate Category, e.g. Soda. Assign it a price, e.g. $.05, and make the Menu Item non-taxable. Save. Apply Menu Item to button layout.
To Create Menu Item -> Manager’s Menu -> Menu Maintenance -> Menu Items and Pricing
3) Create a Menu Item for the bottled drink, e.g. “Pepsi Bottle”. Assign this Menu Item to the appropriate Menu Department, e.g. Beverage and Menu Category, e.g. Soda. Assign the price, e.g. $1.99, and the sales tax associated with the Menu Item. Save. Apply Menu Item to button layout.
To Create Menu Item -> Manager’s Menu -> Menu Maintenance -> Menu Items and Pricing
4) Create a Menu Item for the bottle combined with the deposit, e.g. “Pepsi w Deposit”. Assign this Menu Item to the appropriate Menu Department, e.g. Beverage, and Menu Category, e.g. Soda. The price will be set at $0.00 (this is a shortcut button to ring up the two component Menu Items above). Save. Assign a button on the Button Layout Screen. It is optional to assign the other two Menu Items that were created to buttons. Save.
To Create Menu Button -> Manager’s Menu -> Menu Maintenance -> Menu Item Button Layout
5) Next, configure the “Combo” button for the bottled item and the deposit, e.g. Pepsi w Deposit. Inside Menu Maintenance, go to Combo Menu Items. Select the Combo Name, which will be the Menu Item we created in step 4 above, e.g. Pepsi w Deposit. Then, select the two Menu Items which will apply to this combo in steps 2 and 3 above, e.g. Pepsi Bottle and Bottle Deposit. Save.
To Create Combo -> Manager’s Menu -> Menu Maintenance -> Combo Menu Items
6) Finally, we will create a Paid Out for the bottle return/ deposit return. Create a Menu Item for the bottle return, e.g. Bottle Return. Assign this Menu Item to the Paid Out Department. Assign this Menu Item to the correct Category, e.g. Soda. Assign the price, e.g. $.05, and make the Menu Item nontaxable. Save. Place this Menu Item on a button. Save.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not ring up the Paid Out for the deposit return on the same check with a regular order (purchasing new/ additional Menu Items). These transactions must each be rung up individually on separate checks.
